You've searched your own keywords and you know the sight: your competitor on page one, ranking for terms that should be yours. For months you assumed they had better links, a bigger budget, some SEO wizard on retainer. Then we did a week-long teardown of a client's competitor and found none of that was true.

What they had was boring. Their site had 41 pages; the client had 6. That's it. Not better pages — more pages. Each one answering a single question the client was ignoring: "what's the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel," "can you laser-cut brass," "lead time for custom orders." Small questions. But people search small questions, and every small question is a door your competitor is standing in front of.

We also found their content was older, their design was worse, and their site was slower. They were winning on coverage alone. The client had the better product and the better site; they just had six doors while the competitor had forty-one.

The fix wasn't a link campaign. It was a list: the 35 questions their sales team had answered in the last year, turned into 35 thin-but-real pages. Six months later the client was on page one for eleven of the terms the competitor owned.

Before you pay for links or redesign anything, do the boring audit. Search your own keywords, count your pages against theirs, and write down every question you answer in a sales call. You're probably not losing on quality. You're losing on coverage. And coverage is a spreadsheet problem, not a magic problem.
